Split System vs Ducted Air Conditioning: What Suits a Gold Coast Home?

Both can keep a Gold Coast home comfortable through a humid summer. The right choice depends on your floor plan, budget and how you use each room.

Choosing between a split system and ducted air conditioning is one of the biggest comfort decisions in a Gold Coast home. Both can work well. The right one depends on your floor plan, how you use each room, and what you want the house to look like.

Split systems

A split system cools or heats one room or open plan zone. It is the most affordable way to add air conditioning and is ideal for bedrooms, living areas and granny flats. Multi-head systems connect several indoor units to one outdoor unit.

Ducted systems

Ducted air conditioning runs concealed ducts through the ceiling and cools the whole home from one system, with zones to control individual areas. It suits larger homes and renovations where wall units would spoil the look. It costs more upfront and needs roof space for ducting.

How to choose

  • One or two rooms: split systems are usually the better value.
  • Whole home, clean look: ducted is worth the investment.
  • Running costs: inverter models of both types are efficient, and solar offsets daytime use.
  • Humidity: make sure the system is sized correctly. An oversized unit cools quickly but dehumidifies poorly.

Installation and servicing

Correct sizing, placement and refrigerant handling matter as much as the brand. In Queensland, air conditioning work must be done by a licensed installer. We install and service split systems and ducted systems across the Gold Coast. See our air conditioning services.

Cost: what to expect

As a rule, a single split system costs far less to install than a ducted system, because there is no ductwork, no ceiling access work and only one indoor unit. Ducted systems cost more upfront but can work out well per room in a larger home. The sensible way to compare is to price the whole home both ways. A quote should name the brand, model, capacity and number of outlets, and state what is and is not included.

Comfort and control

Split systems let you cool only the rooms you are using, with separate temperature control in each. Ducted systems give an even temperature through the home and let you switch zones on and off. A well-designed ducted system is quiet inside because the main unit sits in the roof space, whereas a split system places a unit on the wall of each room.

Running costs and solar

Inverter models of either type use much less energy than older fixed-speed units. Running a system in the daytime on solar power reduces the cost further. If you have or plan to add solar, tell us, because we can factor your usage into how the system is set up and sized.

Looks and layout

If you dislike seeing wall units, or your home has an open plan, ducted can be the cleaner option. In a house with a low roof space, a slab-on-ground build or limited ceiling access, ducting may not be practical, and a split or multi-head system is the better fit. This is something we check on site.

Sizing matters more than brand

An undersized system struggles on a hot, humid day. An oversized one switches on and off too quickly, cools unevenly and removes less moisture from the air, which leaves the room feeling clammy. We size systems based on the space, the direction it faces, ceiling height, insulation and how it is used, not just the floor area.

The electrical side

Every air conditioner needs a suitable circuit. In many older homes the switchboard has no room for another circuit or lacks modern safety protection. Because we are electricians as well as air conditioning installers, we can sort out the circuit and any switchboard work in the same visit, rather than coordinating two trades.

Keeping it running well

Dirty filters and coils reduce performance and can lead to smells and higher bills. Filters should be cleaned regularly, and a professional service and clean once a year keeps the system efficient and helps catch problems early. In humid coastal areas like the Gold Coast, regular servicing is worth the small cost.

Frequently asked questions

Is ducted air conditioning worth it?

For larger homes and anyone wanting a concealed look, yes. For one or two rooms, split systems are typically better value.

How often should I service my air conditioner?

Once a year is a good rule, and more often if the unit is near the coast or runs heavily.

Do you install air conditioning in NSW?

Our air conditioning licence covers Queensland, so we install across the Gold Coast and Brisbane.
